Frequently Asked Questions

Are EVs really cheaper over time?
Usually yes, once the higher upfront cost is amortized. In 2026: EVs cost $0.03-0.05/km in electricity vs $0.08-0.15/km in gas. Maintenance is ~50% lower (no oil changes, brake wear down). Break-even typically at 40-80K km.
What about battery degradation?
Modern EV batteries lose ~10-15% capacity over 8-10 years. Manufacturers warranty 8 years / 160K km. Replacement costs $5-15K — usually outlasts first owner.
What about resale value?
EVs historically depreciate faster, but Tesla has held value better. By 2026-2028, used EV market is maturing. We don't factor resale here — use this for operating cost only.
Home vs public charging?
Home charging: $0.10-0.30/kWh depending on region. Public DC fast: $0.40-0.80/kWh. If you'll mostly home charge, use home rate. If no home charging, use a blend.
Other costs not included?
Insurance (often higher for EVs), registration, property tax on vehicles, tolls. These roughly cancel between EV and gas so we skip them.
