Mid-market vs bank rate

This tool shows mid-market rates — the actual exchange rate on interbank markets. Banks and credit cards add a spread (usually 1–3%) plus sometimes a fixed fee. When you exchange physical cash or use credit abroad, your actual rate will be slightly worse.

Tips for better exchange rates

  • Use Wise, Revolut, or similar fintechs for international transfers — they charge close to mid-market rates
  • Avoid airport currency exchanges — worst rates, often 5–10% above mid-market
  • Decline "dynamic currency conversion" at foreign ATMs and POS — always pay in local currency
  • Use credit cards with no foreign transaction fee for travel — typically 0.5–1% above mid-market

Frequently Asked Questions

How often are the rates updated?
Rates are fetched live from open.er-api.com, which refreshes daily with mid-market rates. We cache rates in your browser for up to 1 hour to reduce API calls and keep the tool fast.
Where do the exchange rates come from?
The Open Exchange Rates API aggregates from multiple sources including the European Central Bank and commercial providers. Rates are mid-market — the midpoint between bid and ask. Real bank or credit card rates will differ (typically 1–3% worse for consumers).
Is this accurate for bank transfers?
Close, but banks add fees and use a spread. For a $1000 transfer, your bank might apply a rate 2–4% worse than the mid-market rate shown here, plus a fixed fee. For real quotes, check services like Wise, Revolut, or your bank directly.
Why is my currency missing?
We support 170+ actively traded currencies. Some highly volatile currencies (e.g., Venezuelan bolívar, Zimbabwean dollar) may not have reliable daily rates and could be excluded.
Can I use this for crypto?
No, this tool covers fiat currencies only. For crypto rates, use a dedicated crypto exchange rate API. A toololis crypto converter may come later.
Are my conversions private?
The amount you type stays in your browser. Only the currency pair (e.g., USD→EUR) is sent to the rate API — no amounts, no identifiers. Rates are cached locally after first fetch.
